Circle Round

$17 - Circle Round: Raising Children in Goddess Traditions (Paperback)
Amazon.com review – The 20th-century reclamation of Goddess traditions has evolved from a small counterculture revolution of the mid-1900s to the birthright of an entire generation of children and young teenagers. However, the parents – who were adults when they first turned to paganism – are discovering that raising children in a pagan tradition can prove difficult amidst the near void of resources to assist them in teaching this way of life. Relying on age-old learning methods, such as songs and storytelling, Circle Round fills this void with techniques that are truly rooted in traditions. This priceless resource offers guidelines for helping children discover the different facets of the Goddess tradition – from altars to sabbats – and suggests recipes, creative projects, and other activities resuscitating the values of family in our latchkey society. –Brian Patterson – This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Belief net – "Circle Round" is a wonderful resource for parents of any religion who want to teach their children a reverence for nature. The authors show that the practice of Earth-centered spirituality is not a once-a-week break from the rest of our lives, it is embodied – woven into our eating, sleeping, working, playing, and even breathing. The book's three main sections cover the eight seasonal holidays of the Pagan calendar, the human life-cycle, and the elements. Each section contains activities and rituals, including stories and recipes, and covers the basics while weaving in many unexpected gems. Suggestions range from the widely-practiced (carving pumpkins on Samhain – the Pagan New Year, a.k.a. Halloween) to ones that would seem 'out there' to all but the most open-minded of families (a community-wide 'first blood' ritual celebrating a girl's first period). contemporary fable for Brigit (the holiday marking the beginning of Spring), and many beautiful ideas for celebrating pregnancy and birth.

Monet's Ghost
Monet's Ghost

$9 - Monet's Ghost – From School Library Journal: Grade 7-9. Fifteen-year-old Geena Howe's ability to think herself into a painting provides the plot mechanism that moves this mediocre fantasy forward. The teen decides to explore a favorite piece of art, one of Monet's water lilies. She projects herself into it, enters the previous century, and encounters a young man, Crispin, and his aunt, who are convinced that the castle in which they live is controlled by a ghost. This figure continually transforms their world, with whole wings of the castle appearing and disappearing and their clothes and hair changing on a daily basis. Astute readers will see right through the author's setup, since plenty of hints that Monet is the ghost are provided. While Yarbro does an admirable job of describing scenery and period clothing, as well as the extraordinary light that inspired Monet's Giverny paintings, the book gets bogged down in its repeated exploration of the differences between the two centuries. Since Geena is a plucky and courageous character, determined to find the answers to many of the castle's baffling mysteries, YAs might stick with the book until she successfully navigates back to the 20th century. However, several questions remain unanswered, such as why the characters that Geena encounters in France speak English. Finally, although Geena worries about explaining her absence when she returns to her own time, the author takes the easy way out by ending the novel before she actually faces the police or her parents.?Ellen Fader, Multnomah County Library , Portland , OR Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Charge of the Goddess for Kids - This stemmed from the plea of an 8-year-old to "make it sized for ME!" This is an important part of our shared Pagan/Wiccan heritage that everyone should understand. Without changing the meaning of Doreen Valiente's Charge of the Goddess, the vocabulary and images were fitted to an 8-year-old's level of reading and understanding by a teacher, mother & Priestess.
